Modernist Fashion in SL

Tired of the same greys, blues and blacks I head into the SL Marketplace to find myself something new. After a long haul trawl through many items which were either unsuitable or awful or just more linden dosh than I cared to splash on a single small item. Eventually I found a great range of jackets from Giovanni and I opted to buy a white blazer style jacket. The jackets come in two variations one with a blazer style pocket patch and a second without. Its a classic three button style with neat prim cuffs. Worn with a black FS polo shirt and some neat black trousers it creates an effective mod look.

Finding different mod styled mod items is getting more and more difficult, I either find myself repeating items with slight twists or I grasp at straws using items that at a stretch can meet a NeoMod criteria.

Paul Weller - Desert Island Discs

Found this old radio broadcast whilst flipping through the BBC radio pages, interesting musical choices and an insightful interview.

Modernist Fashion in SL

As these are so easy to knock out, requiring little creative input and the technical ability to cut and paste and little else here is the inevitable PART THRE. The tunes today are from another mod compilation on my I-Tunes. Yeah I really do spend all day listening to music and hammering the keys. If only.......

And so to the fashion, I reckon if you dump the hood (cowl) this should provide an excellent 2Tone inspired track jacket but wow that cubist pattern certainly phases the eyes if you stare at it too long, sharp!

Sweatshirt cube

{AHC} Valenciaga - Tweed Jacket

Not really a mod item at all this more generic sixties pop but there are a lot of people who like that kind of thing who pop into the blog so this is one for all you sixties fans, the pretty fab Monkees, I'll hold my hands up I really like their tunes. Is that my mod credibilty [the little I had] fallen through the trapdoor, feck it, lol.

SHIKI-fall jacket

Well thats it for this third part I doubt there will be furher posts of this nature, given you enough hints on where to look and see whats out there. Second Life Marketplace is a cool tool but a touch labourious for the virtual mod: type MOD into the search engine and you'll see why if you've not already guessed. Anyway if you bought an item hope it pleases you, time for me to chill with some coffee and toast. Boy I work hard at this blog shite!

Discovering what an easy cop out this sticking snapshots up malarky is I have decided its time for PART TWO. So I have the Immediate collection on I-Tunes and am listening to this:

Whilst typing out this drivel. Right lets get too it, less waffle and more snapshots and links, a few here I'd buy myself but....Anyway hope its of some use to some fashion visitors and to others more madness and waffle soon, just chill amigos.

First item up is the fat pack, merely to show the full colour range, each item can be bought individually or you can dive in for a fat pack.

Anthony - Male Business Suit

NeoMods wear leather too, check out this for your NeoMod styling:

s'LADE MEN - Casual Blazer

Unplugged Suit jacket

So, that is this one done, quick sharp possibly very dull, but if somebody finds it of some little use its served its purpose. Besides its economy of effort I'm blogging whilst remaining ostensibly idle, perfect. Therefore, part three is obviously inevitable.

Modernist Fashion in Sl

I often wake up early and bored, put the kettle on and click on my I-Tunes to idle away an hour or so listening to some cool Mod tunes, presently this is playing off a neat sixties compilation:

Tunes established I then have to decide how I'll fill in a bit of time sat at the computer screen; sometimes, I head off to the Second Life Marketplace as I've done this morning. Often during these trawls through the fashion morass I see items that I would not buy but perhaps have a degree of mod fashion potential, but I never list them as I dont purchase them. Therefore, this morning I figured I'd kill several birds with a single stone: I'd put up a lengthy post without actually having to type much at all. Also, I will highlight a few mod items that normally would not get blogged and also I'm not required to spend any lindens. So I have basically grabbed the snapshot of the item from its page at the marketplace and then added the link to the item below it. I neither recommend nor do I advise against purchase so the choice is yours I'm merely acting as a conduit into your lindens wallet, and all for free....are you listening designers, hahaha.

Last Eden Parka

One item thats very popular amongst mods, and especially Mod revivalists of the eighties is the leatrher trench coat, inspired by the Ace Face Sting [c'mon don't laugh] in the iconic film Quadrophenia. Anyway here is a selection of trench coats of variable merit and price. Seek and ye shall find.

B11 Men's long coat

Black Leather Trench Coat

MarcoD'AvanteTrenchcoat

As well as a coat every virtual mod is going to need a jacket or two maybe these appeal and can fill that hole in your mod wardrobe.

And as the tunes wind down I think I'll leave this post and leave you to decide if there is anything here worth purchasing, I just dont have the funds to buy everything, despite all evidence to the contrary. Enjoy your linden splashing...I need a coffee refill.

Second Life male mod fashion items are a scarce commodity and so its usual to look outside of mainstream sixties British styles. One valuable virtual aid is to check the Japanese fashion houses of the virtual world. Japanese edgy fashion has some NeoMod crossover potential and I discovered this range of sharp looking blazers whilst muddling through the fashion options at the Marketplace. They come in a wide range of colour, variations and are scripted for sizing and the trousers also have colour scripting; a scripted tie is also included in the package. It seems a reasonable option for 400$l with various colour change options, as yet Ive not bought one but I might just treat myself. If your looking for a sharp NeoMod style with a splash of Asian flair this could prove to be a good option. Its available at either the Marketplace or the store inworld..

Suits Galore

If you are opting to dip your toes into the virtual mod scene there is no actual requirement to dress the part, indeed the amount of leather clad bikers or alien burlesque troopers that attend virtual mod clubs probably outnumbers those dressed as mods. But, sometimes its cool to dress for the part and therefore you are going to need at least one mod essential - a decent suit. Call me a fashion snob but I'm afraid that selection of free business men suits with a colourful ranee of shirt and tie combinations just will not cut it! Despite this looking like a sharp suited mod does not require the purchase of multitudes of lindens dollars, a visit to the Marketplace and select a few search options to reduce the number of items available and in the 100-500linden dollar range you can find plenty of suits that will enable you to adopt anything from a sharp early sixties look to a more flamboyant mid sixties mod fashion colourfest. Even here I would advise caution as a high price does not always equate with quality so exercise some caution. Five hundred lindens splashed out on a shoddy one piece [layer] suit might leave you with a few regrets. But, so long as the suit has a cool vibe and you're happy with it go for it. Ive bought 50l$ suits that have made me look far more mod than 1000l$ top end design garments. So buyer beware and take heed at what you wear.

In terms of mod fashion I can only points you in the direction of the hugely undervalued Kinks who sum it up far more succinctly than I ever could, err thank you Ray.

Besides the obvious free items; the cool thing about virtual treasure hunts is they often take you into stores you may never have heard of or just dont think are worth looking into. So when I decided to follow a few clues for the GO 4 GOAL Treasure Hunt I found some cool items including a rather nice shirt tie blazer combination with links to the host nation, very nice. Then I saw they also had a cool blazer with an English three lions emblem and thought it had slight modernist potential and even though its really a girld design [hence the mini-skirt that comes with it] I grabbed one.

Sports Blazers, of this styling: brass buttoned, double breasted seem very unmodlike too old fashioned, stuffy and middle class. But in the eighties revival they were often worn as the revivalists began to define their own style that moved slightly away from the rigid definitions of sixties modernists; therefore, they definitely have a place in the NeoMod fashion style of Second Life. The pack comes with to jacket layers, one with the Three Lions pocket badge, and the other with the St George flag. The shirt layer comes with a nice shirt/tie combination that can be worn with other suits and jackets. As its aimed at women there is also the aforemention skirt so you modettes are well catered for here. The seperate shirt and jacket layers give the item flexibilty as the jacket can be worn with other items, polo shirt for example, as can the shirt. I particularly like items that possess the potential to mix and match, versatility in styling is a huge design bonus. The texturing and cut of the items is very good and for your money you get a very well made, flexible piece of clothing that has several application within your mod brief.

Worn here with my classic Unknown Boutique white jeans and [unseen] FKNY loafers the jacket and shirt/tie look sharp and very NeoMod so I uege you to get yourself to the London Girl store, yes thats right London GIRL store and grab some clothing with iconic English mod insignia.

Valiant

Bought this fantastic grey cardigan at Valiant, its a superbly crafted piece of virtual tailoring and screams modernist once its paired up with a suitable cool shirt. Worn here with a pair of sharp Armidi trousers and the awesome Unknown Boutique button down shirt the Valiant has a truly authentic retro mod feel to it. The little white motif and the excellent textured work, plus prim sleeve cuffs make this a wonderful casual, yet hinting at smart, dress item well worthy of a place in your virtual wardrobe.

Also from Valiantis this great jacket, with its neat breast pocket detailing, it comes with a neckerchief texture and shirt/sweater too [altho I have worn the Unknown Boutique shirt underneath] which combine to give a rather sharp revivalist modernist look. However, because the item is single layered it lacks the versatility of the best Second Life creations. Far better to have jacket, shirt, sweater neckerchief on a variety of layers in a mixture of combinations to allow for greater versatilty in its fashion adaptation. But, despite this petty complaint the jacket looks very mod and when matched with some cool trousers, shades and haircut it is a wonderful modernist item.

Modernist Fashion in SL

I visited Valiant today, and agreed with myself to restrict my purchasing and set myself a very humble budget which allowed me to purchase a single item. Wandering the store, this became very difficult indeed as there were several choice items that possessed a modernist flair. First there were a couple of sweaters, then a jacket, then a cardigan, shorts...hey mods go to the beach too, and not always to brawl. I was stumbling back and forth regretting my budget setting, but determined to stick with it whilst also wishing I was an uber blogger who gets this stuff hurled at him to review. Eventually I decided to opt for the cool military style blazer that comes with several prim details to give it that mid sixties mod feel.

The blazer is similar to the miltary jackets that are on sale, which come in a range of colours, the blazer, however, comes in black with white trim nothing else. Its the addition of the miltary stripes that give the blazer its mod feel, similar to the military regalia sported by Townsend and Entwistle in the early mid sixties Who publicity shots. The prim cuffs also sport a white trim which matches that on the lapels, and make the jacket a loose casual item rather than a staid more formal style blazer; thus, it is ideal for wearing with jeans.

I matched it with a cool Lonsdale shirt, which is multi-layered and so hugely versatile; some cool faded jeans from Juice, that come with prim cuffs; and finally, some smart shoes/trainers from "J's", I bought the flatpack as they come in very useful for a variety of styles.

Check Valiant out, splash your lindens freely or be more circumspect there is plenty to keep the virtual mod happy.

Modernist Fashion in SL

As often happens on a dull grey morning I often find myself wandering across the grid hoping to uncover some hidden modernist fashion gem. The Ska Shack is hardly hidden but its most certainly a gem. So, what can you expect to find, some classic mod band T-Shirts, the classic Pete Townsend Union Jack jacket, an uber cool outfit from the cult TV series The Prisoner . There is a large selection of Union Jack T-Shirts that filter out onto the mod fashion scene, plus an awesome Soviet sweatwhirt, thats beautifully textured and a fantastic piece of casuals fashion. Worn with a well textured pair of jeans and classic trainers the sweatshirt is classic NeoMod style. The sixties jackets very rare items indeeed, being amongst the very few specific male mod fashion items on the grid, grab them if you can.

Modernist Fashion in SL

Another wet dreary morning has me idling about the grid checking what's available when I picked up this cool suit at Sister Strawberry. Its inspired by Japanese school uniforms, but in black its look is distinctively retro with great modernist possibilities and for 150lindens I thought it was well worth a splash. The suit/uniform comes with several variations, tartan trousers or black; open jacket or closed; cardigan, various shirt options too and so its very vesatile. The style is more Bratles/ bet group than pure retro mod but in a grid with scant sixties mod resources the virtual mod fashion victim seeks solace where he can and this makes a fine addition to the virtual mods fashion digest.

Well crafted with lots of neat prim details [shirt cuffs at the sleeves for example]; nice texturing and an eye for sharp design this outfit is a baragain at its price of 150lindens, as I have seen inferior types selling for far more. The grey trim and detailing of the blazer/jacket do emphasise the Beatlesque nature of the styling but it is so well done I forgive it that and matched with my workhorse Josef shirt it definitely looks suitably retro.

Tobacco Dock

An interesting find with some very cool items for the modernist at extremely reasonable prices. Amongst the hidden treasures is a trio of cool insignia T-Shirts [the Union Flag, the Ensign and the classic mod Target] ideal for throwing on alongside a pair of faded jeans and heading out on your scooter. Other cool T-Shirts are a soccer shirt emblazoned with the three lions; there is also a blue shirt sporting the three lions but in the cricketing style.

Continuing with the sporting theme is a true gem that could give you that little individualistic flair essential in any modernist wardrobe. A fell set of cricketing whites plus blazer, combining this with an uber cool sweater from Muism you can create a classic gent style with sharp English iconagrphy and real modernist appeal.

While you're there grag the scooter hoodie, which has several modernist applications and possibly the ragged union jack jeans. Although they may bne a tad too raggedy for uber cool modernists they can provide a subtle mod look in a skinhead/punk vein. The neoMod embraces several styles to create a unique modernist look for themselves.

Modernist Fashion in SL

A classic item of the modernists wardrobe, the blazer...the brighter the better. And, here are three brilliant examples to be found in the metaverse modernist inventory. The first shows an Italian box jacket influence, but its vibrant colours and sharp design make it an essential find for any mod on the second life trail of modernist utopia. Next is a traditionalist boating blazer picked up in Mako as store dedicated to vintage wear, 1920s, Victorian et al. A much heavier English tailored designs but highly suited to the modernist look. Finally, a tennis club blazer from Young Urban who have made mod influenced designs in their store all of which can be utilised by the neoModernist in Second Life.

So throw on your blazer but forget about punts, leap on your scooter and head on a medicated all nighter in the virtual world.
