Bits of this and Bits of that......

Despite my miserable posting performance and the fact I have missed a lot of Soul Mods nights out whilst sat in my chair; there have been a few cool things occuring in my somewhat limited Second Life.

First off, Shauna gave me a really groovy cap that matched my Hoorenbeek suit and Muism sweater perfectly, put a twenties spin on my modernist look but I thought it looked great and wore it whilst I grooved at Soul Mods a while back. Shauna is producing a lot of sharp designs at her store so I suggest you retro girls head over to Moonletters and check out all the stores as its a great place for retro clothing stores. For girls obviously, us blokes are as a rule too tight to splash our lindens on clothes,,,surely not! Looking at the sharp dressers at Soul Mods you think not but sadly they are generally the exception.

I bought myself another military mod outfit in my pursuit of the 1967 look, not sure if its quite right but I'll probably blog more on it at some point. Anyway, it looks kinda cool just need to find some trousers to set it in its sixties retro context. Also bought a wildly pink suit from Shiki, to show its not just Graz who does pink y'know. I'll blog more on this later too just thought I would mention it as an excuse for fiddling with throwing up a couple of snapshots.

Other madcap adventures followed reading Jellie's post over at the Moonletters blog which I saw as a challenge, okay I admit I cheated, whilst I went for a cuppa and watched TV I weighed down the page up key to gain height whilst I chilled, I felt it was only fair after Albion crunched his head on a floating platform, I realised how dull climbing to over 100,000m on your own can be and thirdly my finger dtarted to forget what its role in life was beyond depressing that key. And to be fair, there is really nothing up there, try it yourself, go on go on....

Albion chasing the moon, but eventually you leave all this behind and the sky is just full of stars, the guy who hit over a million meters must have gone crazy. Orbitting myself might get me to that hieght but as for flying there, werr I leave that to jellie, 103,000m give or take is probably my limit. If however you fancy it yoursef, feel free to fly high and send me a TP when you get there. Chilled in space, starring Albion Spitteler. Not much to do with virtual modernism, altho Mods in Space has a kind of freaky B Film ring to it, flying scooter anyone. Besides it gives me an excuse to post two awesome tracks, one is from the mid sixties pop art mod genre the other is mod suspect but a fantastic tune so what the feck. Have you guessed them yet, no? I cant hide my disappointment.

Modernist Fashion in SL

One of the great stores in Second Life is Style Extrem, Upper Man and Happy End who stock many items worthy of inclusion in a revivalist, casualist, indie NeoMod wardrobe. I have several items from here, and one of the best features of the store is its weekly FREE gift. Free clothing is always nice, and should always be appreciated but when its FREE cool and mod our gratitude should enter the realms of monstrosity. My latest cool freebie is an excellent track jacket very casuals or indie and thus an ideal NeoMod item.  Worn with a classic pair of Hoorenbeek trainers and my favourite Unknown Boutique white jeans it helps create a very sharp casuals look. I have also received several cool sweaters, shirts and other jackets. All this can be yours if you join the group and teleport over to the store and grab the selected freebies as they are announced. Be sharp, be mod be free!!!!

Modernist Fashion in SL

Well there I was wondering what drivel I could scribble this morning and decided my mind was blank and therefore I would cop out and basically shove up a lot of links to items I'm too careful with my lindens to snap up. However if I had an unlimited supply there'd be a kerching all over the place. I have also tried to put up a lot of cheap items. Its easier to find virtual mod items for several hundred lindens but getting something for less than fifty is a tough trickier.

Lazy blogging rules.

Mens Stuff Fashion Hunt

Hunting prizes seems to be an endless activity in the virtual world, with hunts organised for fashion items on a regular basis. Some are themed for specific genre others are based around the stores on a sim and they are generally heavily biased towards items for the girls. However a while back a few hunts started targeted directed at men, the prizes all being for men. One such hunt is the Mens Stuff Hunt currently running until the 3rd of July 2011. Whilst these hunts are stuffed to the brim with items to find, spending hours scouring various stores to locate the gift item its not often that there are items suitable for the aspiring virtual mod. I had a brief potter about and located the odd one or tow items. So, if you're bored and fancy a look why not participate, join the group find the Blue T-Shirt symbol click on it and away you go.

So what did I find, I liked the Alphamale prize, the preppy sweater which had a revivalist feel to it, I also liked the trousers from another prize, the Brocade Tiger cargo shorts looked good for my Style Council Long Hot Summer romp, plus the Philo shades looked awesome contemporarydesign but so sharp I'd add them The Duh shoes look cool plus I'm sure there'll be a few other pieces out there just need to filter through the items to find them. Have fun.

Awaydays

Amongst the many things I find myself endlessly wittering on about in this loose collection of waffle is casuals fashion. Undoubtedly many people assume this is a relaxed kind of dress, easy enough to surmise that but its quite the contradiction. Casuals had extremely rigid dress codes, in essence they were little more than neatly dressed football hooligans; but their hooliganism oozed sartorial style.

Read this book years ago, rekindled some lost memories not on this scale but severe enough. Along with other sharp styles, over time casual dress codes become absorbed into the wider sharp fashion yearnings of the NeoMods. Although Second Life struggles to provide an array of suitable classic mod wear it is however bulging at the seems with aspects of the casuals dress code: trainers, jeans and track wear. Find it, wear it just leave the stanleys at home cheers.

Amongst the many suppliers of trainers, Hoorenbeek should be a first port of call. There is a wealth of finely sculpted trainers here. Classic retro eighties stylings are a specialist of the Hoorenbeek designers. This classic pair are on old freebie pair modelled along classic Adidas lines. Hoorenbeek rarely strays into reality fashion these days sticking to its own virtual branding, but the styling is close enough to please the virtual mod seeking to immerse himself in some casuals footwear. Also worn here are some khaki jeans with prim cuffs from  ::Mr.Poet:: and a cool casuals styled jersey from [Sheep Door] , which is FREE just join the group and get your group gift. If Hoorenbeek is not ticking the correct boxes do not fret, there are a range of other footwear options. First to try is the uber cool Adidas branded trainers from SoReal. This is a very cool urban funk store, not cheap, but their items are well crafted and possess great scripts to help you tailor your fit. However there are trainers spread across the grid just ensure you select the correct style. Decent pair of jeans and a track top and your almost there, sharp hair and your casuals inspired NeoMod styling is complete.

As for the film and book, nostalgia of the darkest kind, read the book watch the film both are quite good, but I'm no film or literary critic I just like what I like, ciao la!

As these are so easy to knock out, requiring little creative input and the technical ability to cut and paste and little else here is the inevitable PART THRE. The tunes today are from another mod compilation on my I-Tunes. Yeah I really do spend all day listening to music and hammering the keys. If only.......

And so to the fashion, I reckon if you dump the hood (cowl) this should provide an excellent 2Tone inspired track jacket but wow that cubist pattern certainly phases the eyes if you stare at it too long, sharp!

Sweatshirt cube

{AHC} Valenciaga - Tweed Jacket

Not really a mod item at all this more generic sixties pop but there are a lot of people who like that kind of thing who pop into the blog so this is one for all you sixties fans, the pretty fab Monkees, I'll hold my hands up I really like their tunes. Is that my mod credibilty [the little I had] fallen through the trapdoor, feck it, lol.

SHIKI-fall jacket

Well thats it for this third part I doubt there will be furher posts of this nature, given you enough hints on where to look and see whats out there. Second Life Marketplace is a cool tool but a touch labourious for the virtual mod: type MOD into the search engine and you'll see why if you've not already guessed. Anyway if you bought an item hope it pleases you, time for me to chill with some coffee and toast. Boy I work hard at this blog shite!

St Patrick's Day Mod

For those of you who like to join in the festivities I grabbed a few treasure hunt freebies, some group gifts and a few old favourites plus the odd cheap item to create a kind of green NeoMod look to groove with the Oirish on their big day of booze laughs and the craic. This time of year there is so much green about its hard not to trip over it so if you want to green up for next year keep your eyes open for the freebies. Albion has a neat hat from StarChild, its Fedora Brown in Tartan and a gift at Menswear Fashion Week. He is also wearing some Role Optic shades which are part of the DIMH2 Treasure Hunt. Along with an old favourite the Meriken shirt, he is wearing a sweater from Acid and Mala Creations as part of the 49L$ Sale For Dudes, it has three colours available, and is multi-layered allowing multiple wear options. Next up is a great group gift from Gizza, the jeans from their group gift for St Paddy's day, and finally my classic Gos Dr Martin boots.

So, okay where can I grab this stuff:

Fashionable Updates

I was again trudging, and yes it is a trudge to find anything really relevant to this blog now, through the Marketplace when I stumbled upon a couple of items when I entered "Carnaby" in the search engine. First up popped a skinhead inspired shorty skirt outfit that might appeal to some of the dancers at Soul Mods, not strictly mod or skinhead but this style appeals to many and so I've put up a link and a snap in case there are girls interested. Yes I am  a nice chap, ta!

Jane Westminster

Next up were a couple of familiar faces and if you cant plug your mates stuff on your own blog your up shit creek. So I';m happy to once again punt forward Eden and Kim's clothes, which can be bought at their store on the Moonletters Sim and now also at the Marketplace. Their design style is probably the most authentically sixties on the grid, just need to get sewing a few geezers shirts. Check it out girls, if you want to look the part at the mod events I waffle on about this is an ideal starting point.

Kim's stuff :-  https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/68479

Eden's stuff :-  https://marketplace.secondlife.com/stores/69500

So there you go a couple of quick fashionables for all the girlies out there, better get some myself don't want to disappoint Graz and his  conspiracy theory, hahaha.

Modernist Fashion in SL

Sometimes you have an item thats been sat in your inventory and you find that you forgot you had it and when you finally throw it on it opens up a wealth of fashion possibilities. I did this the other day with a simple but nicely textured white cardigan, I threw on a suitably mod T-Shirt with some wild free purple trousers I picked up free from the London Freebies Store and decided I was ideally equipped for that scooter rally to Brighton beach...sadly that sim is no more so I had to make do with a scooter ride around Moonletters. Despite the klack of a promanade I still felt cool on my Slate built Vespa, dressed in white like a mod icream-man, hell yeah babeee. One well made item can exhert a strong influence over several other items sharpening them up and imbuing them with a nice touch of class.

Then a quick change into the fabulous Armidi black trousers and a great black button down shirt from the Unknown Boutique, the all black look offset by the sharp white cardigan giving a more sophisticated look: sharper cleaner more cut for that dance at the local club cica 1964. The cardigan still retains the casualness of the look but the neat shirt and trousers upscale the clothing from the T-Shirt on the beach feel to a more,,all because the lady loves milk tray elegance ideal for a night at the Twisted Wheel, gone but never forgotten.

The shades are free too, a simple textured pair which look okay and suit these looks but there are better sculpted pairs of shades on the market but if you like them , they are yours at Alphavillain.

And, the cardigan, I almost forgot, thats available from Alienated.

Modernist Fashion in SL

There I was adding a few snaps to a Flickr group when I came across a great fashion snap that oozed sixties style; a quick add followed by a quicker request and here I have my first guest fashion piece, even though its still me waffling just better quality pics than my usual feeble attempts at techy stuff.

What drew me initially to this shot was the hair, very Weller circa '79/'80 combined with the excellent poses it screamed sixties cool. The all black clothing adds to the feeling of relaxed confidence typical of the scene. I could have gathered all these items and fumbled about trying to recreate it; but I felt it was cooler in its original format so thanks to Beelly Blanco for allowing me full use of his work. Armidi are one of my favourite designers, Italian classic design the foundation of sixties modernism. These sharp black pants matched to the simple but well textured sweater give a very cool style and the plain black loafers from Kalins adds to the beatnik modernist cross over. However for me the item that propels the image into mod stardom is the hair from UncelWebb. It is one of the classiest pieces of modernist hair styling on the grid, right up there with the legendary GL Menace, as worn by virtual mod face Lupo Lexington. Both share Welleresque stylings and this new discovery now firmly sits in my mod folder, what a find!

Again thanks to Beelly for letting me use this shot, an excellent slice of uber cool mod fashion, get on your scooters and get collecting.

Modernist Fashion in SL

I have blogged this sale before but as it is still raging I thought I would give it another mention, so the fity percent sale is still raging at Dyn, go take a look!
The Dyn fifty percent sale is still running, so its well worth checking out this UK fashion stronghold a bastion for casual NeoMod clothing. Dyn sells a selection of cool shirts, sweater, polos and sportswear that all tilts its head toweards NeoModernist fashion. Some of their stylings are firmly based on real life fashion, indeed using the real life label in their branding, but they seem to be moving further away from this to create their own unique designs which are perhaps less modernist in concept and execution.

I grabbed these three Paul Smith influenced polo shirts in the sale, a bargain at 50L each; however, I would have prefered a shirt layer alongside the jacket layer to allow me to combine them with a corresponding v-neck sweater or a sharp jacket. This insistance on single layer fashion design can become quite frustrating for the dedicated mix and match modernist stylist. As for the items themselves they look great, neat NeoMod look with cool textures and a sharp stylish design ... I am happy with them despite my minor grumbling.

Another sharp real life item I recently picked up at Dyn was this uber cool Sergio Tacchini track top. A classic of the eighties casuals fashion wardrobe this white track top worn with jeans and my MK Adidas mamba trainers yells retro casuals fashion to anybody able to listen. Its a classic NeoMod combination of Britpop fashion duistain moulded onto eighties casuals styling. The neat feather cut styling of the hair plus the cool shades all combine with the well textured clothing to create a sharp Neo Mod look. Faded rather than pristeen denim looks better but the look can also be achievec with a dark denim but the jeans must remain quite a simple denim design if you hope to achieve the casuals retro look.

But it is not just copied textures from famous real life fashionistas that Dyn sells they have an ever expanding range of their own designs that at well worth taking a look at. One that particularly caught my eye was the short navy blue duffel jacket, neatly textured with a nice prim hood which I felt had an air of the NeoMod about it. Another jacket to be worn with jeans and trainers. Totally abhorrant to traditional retroist modernist in their sharp tailored suits I still feel such items have a place in the wider fashion stuylings of the NeoMod virtual style. Its a well crafted item and a slightly unusual look, and standing out dfrom the crowd shoyuld feature in anyb mods fashion criteria ... no wall flowers required thank you.

Amongst my favoured Dyn items are their range of sweaters, simplistic linear design with a modernist influence which lends itself fantastically well to either the retro sixties styling or the more contemporary [although thats nearly thirty years ago, so contemporary is a bit of a misnomer] casuals styling of the eighties. This simple tight v-necked sweater is an example of the latter, possessing its own label on the texture. The texturing and design look great, and worn with jeans and a suitable shirt its a classic piece of NeoMod styling.

I urge you to go check it out at the Dyn fashion house before they decide to end it. And while your there grab a few other items too, it all fleshes out your virtual mod wardrobe wonderfully.

Modernist Fashion in SL

Dropped in at ASS today and saw these sharp sweaters on sale, there noticed there was a fatpack available for 200L$ which in Second Life is pretty good value. You get a range of five colours that come in various layer option to give you bags of options in how you wear the item. The layer also carries the white shirt/ black tie on the texture which means you cannot intergrate the sweater with other items but it looks sufficiently retro for this not to seriously concern the purchaser looking to enhances their sixties styling.

Coupled up with my reliable cheap Diesel styled jeans the sweater creates a laid back casual retro look that is ideal for a NeoMod stylised fashion look. It could also be smartened to accentuate the shirt/tie element by wearing it with some suitable trousers to create a perhaps more classically retro look. The sweaters can be bought as individual items but the fatpack seemed such good value it seemed a folly to let it slide by.

Expect to see this look in a club near you shortly.

Valiant

Bought this fantastic grey cardigan at Valiant, its a superbly crafted piece of virtual tailoring and screams modernist once its paired up with a suitable cool shirt. Worn here with a pair of sharp Armidi trousers and the awesome Unknown Boutique button down shirt the Valiant has a truly authentic retro mod feel to it. The little white motif and the excellent textured work, plus prim sleeve cuffs make this a wonderful casual, yet hinting at smart, dress item well worthy of a place in your virtual wardrobe.

Also from Valiantis this great jacket, with its neat breast pocket detailing, it comes with a neckerchief texture and shirt/sweater too [altho I have worn the Unknown Boutique shirt underneath] which combine to give a rather sharp revivalist modernist look. However, because the item is single layered it lacks the versatility of the best Second Life creations. Far better to have jacket, shirt, sweater neckerchief on a variety of layers in a mixture of combinations to allow for greater versatilty in its fashion adaptation. But, despite this petty complaint the jacket looks very mod and when matched with some cool trousers, shades and haircut it is a wonderful modernist item.

HellBop Trousers

HellBop specializes in Fifties Americana fashion, but fortunately some of the trousers in these fifties collections can be applied to your sixties mod look. Its possible to take the bright colourful techno popart fabric designs and slide them seamlessly into a retro mod fashion brief.

These black/ white striped trousers are a classic example of how easily the fabric design can be swallowed up into a mod look. Paired with the correct shirt, sweater or jacket combination you can create an intrinsically mod mid sixties style with a minimum of effiort. In this instance a stark black roll neck sweater from Artilleri with complimentary sixties styled shades confirms the trousers are architypal sixties fashion designs, of the bolder more daring mid sixties era .. at which point the mods had discovered colour and were on the verge of sliding away from rhythm and blues and into psechedeklia. I would say there is a claim to mod fashion on the cusp of this shift but thereafter the mods descend into hippiedom and the style is lost until it re-emerges in its more severe skinhead form in the late sixties early seventies.

The paisley fabric of this second pair probably has more of an attachment to the sixties than to the fifties and so is even easier to absorb into your mod fashion stable. Once again matched with the simple Artilleri sweater and sixties shades this is an utterly modernist retro look that declares your mod affiliations to all who know what to look for. These sets come in several colour variations, and there are other fabric designs available that are suitable for a sixties fashion look. With prim cuffs, and options on belt colouring included they are nicely crafted and look good with a smart pair of shoes and come in at a very reasonable 150L; often clothing of this quality demands twice this price, so they are well worth investigating.

For some time I have been looking for trousers that exude that mid seventies soul boy vibe, I have tried prim cuffed flared jeans which almost provide what I am looking for; but, these high wasted trousers from HellBop are one step closer to my ideal. Still not utterly correct, they need to be flared but the high wasted styling is very reminscent of what I remember the older soul boys of the period wearing. The textured braces [jacket layer] add to the look of athletic soul boy dancer, and can be worn bare chested or with a suitably small tight vest, which also seemed to be a standard item for the best of the Northern Soul dance heroes. Nicely textured, with prim cuffs the trousers look great with my Jeepers Creepers Oxford shoes, all I need is some talc on the virtual dance floor and I'm set to do my spins and back drops. If you want that seventies look but are tired of wearing jeans I recommend you grab the SLURL and get over to grab a pair of these trousers which come in a range of colours and are also marked at 150l, a soul boys bargain. Get on it! ciao.

Modernist Fashion in SL

Check out Noar, as there are some very cool items available here with a real mod style.

First up is an essential piece of revivalist fashion, the cycling jersey which seemed to be evetywhere amongst young mods circa '81. The brasher and louder the better in cycling jersey design there is no roon for understated subtley, neither in real life or virtual; despite this, the rather wild and bold red spotty design of this cycling jersey may be too much for some. However, married to a pair of cool white jeans, some chilled shades and bowling shoes and I believe you have a great piece of modernist styling. Indeed I liked this look so much I opted to wear it on my return to the virtual mod scene after my week away. Come out of the grey shadows and adorn yourself in a splash of scarlet.

Another great item is the neat cardigan with a simple graphic stripe design, an ideal sixties piece for wearing over polo shirts with jeans. The bold green stripe and simple black trim are classic retro fashion devices and so work extremely well when attempting to cultivate your virtual mod look. Choose a solid coloured polo and wear the cardigan over it to give yourself a true sixties design. Wear jeans to accentuate the casual nature of the cardigan/polo combination with ideally a pair of iced deserts boots [and if you find some let me know] or failing that your trusty Jeepers Creepers bowling shoes. There is a second sweater that would be great for those modettes outt there or mods bolder than I in startling pink, pink suits are one thing and entire pink wardrobe is a shade too far, but it would be an exceptional piece for those modettes looking to dress down but still have a touch of colour, a bit of flash, whilst wearing denims and polom shirts and at less than a 100 linden your not crying yourself to the bank. A nice sharp relaxed sixties retro look that is easily achievable, so get one!

Next up, that casuals classic the sheepskin. Not a typically mod piece at all but as the NeoMods absorbed the retro, revivalist and offshoot styles the sheepskin has a place in the pantheon of virtual mod fashion. Reasonable for the price but I felt the prim collar was a touch small and required some serious editting, so although it looked ok in snaps as I moved it looked a tad disjointed. Overlarge male avi shapes lie at the heart of it but what can you do unless you want to look like a dwarf? Anyway, that slight criticism apart its a nice item and if your looking to develop your mod style along casuals lines this would be a good purchase.

Modernist Fashion in SL

More a US Fifties style house than a British sixties store HellBop however still has a lot to offer the wandering mod fashionista. Beneath the reams of fifties bowling shirts et al are a few gems that are easily transferable into a sixties setting. Amongst my favourites is this electic blue cardigan, matched with some sharp black trousers and my falgship Josef whiteshirt/black tie combination it immediately slots itself into a sixties beat boy look that is prefectly acceptable in modernist fashion terms. It also looks great with poloshirts, T-Shirts and jeans definitely a workhorse fashion item that has a host of variable applications.

So, while your wondering if you can get away with wearing your dull grey business suit yet again, get a grip , leap on your Vespa and head over to HellBop for a touch of flash ... you know it makes sense.

Some of my Favourites

I first saw these Armidi trousers worn by Lupo Lexington, who also passed on information about the Unknown Boutique, and immediately thought they were cool. They come in a wide range of colours are sharply textured and come with excellent prim cuffs to give you that uber sixties tight cuff effect, no randam flare with these beauties. I have several pairs and would advise any budding mod fashionista to purchase at least one pair, sadly no fat pack so I pick them up randomly as I need them. They look great with a blazer or jacket, even withg a smary sweater or shirt, a definite must in my view for the virtual mod.

I saw these cool trainers/shoes on one of the many fashion blogs on the web and immediately saw they had a mod potential. The simplistic design of full colour and single white stripe trim is very retro. The cut of the the shoes and the texturing give them a bowling shoe feel which is architypal mod shoewear. Initially my plan was to nuy just one pait but I had such difficulties in choosing one, and the fatpack deal was so good, I eventually bought the lot. There are eight different colours [six are shown here, the orange is on the Valiant post, and I omitted the pink], and whilst not scripted for sizing they do come in a wide range of different sizes accomodating all avatars. A definite wardrobe essential I wear these with jeans or trousers, the black pair can even be worn with a heavy black suit to lift it and give it a sixties mod feel; the versatility of these shoes means I would advise you to get a pair if they are still available. Why blog unavailable stuff? Because I like them! If they are no longer available look out for something similar its rare that quality stuff completely fades away, its often an inspiration for designers to create similar items.

Another essential is a quality roll neck sweater, and the set I bought from Muism whilst expensive are hard to beat.

This roll neck has been designed as a multi-layered piece allowing it to be comfortably worn under jackets, sweaters or even shirts. Its wonderfully textured, as expected from Muism, and comes with a nice prim roll neck. Its subued colours means it can be easily matched with most other itens whether they are similary subdued ot more vibrant, an ecellant accessory to suits its mulkti-layering creation means it is also able to be worn as a stand alone sweater. Found througfhout this blogs snapshots, worn with blazers jackets or trousers, I would definitely place it in my list of virtual essentials. However, Muism comes at a cost and since I orignially bought this set there are now other designers producing excellent roll neck sweaters that look quite similar and it might be possible to grab one of those. Whether they are multi-layered and thus have the same versatilty of the Muism set, I do not know. Are they as well textured? Thats for you to judge, follow the old maxim ... you pays yer money and takes yer chance.

There are of course generic favourites, shades, a black suit, shirt and tie for example. Shades are best in black with a retro vibe and as I recently recieved a FREE pair from Cheerno, as a group gift, matching that criteria they are currently my favourites. Talking free I also grabbed a FREE black suit from Alphamale which has also lodged itself firmly in my wardrobe
