Modernist Fashion in Sl

I often wake up early and bored, put the kettle on and click on my I-Tunes to idle away an hour or so listening to some cool Mod tunes, presently this is playing off a neat sixties compilation:

Tunes established I then have to decide how I'll fill in a bit of time sat at the computer screen; sometimes, I head off to the Second Life Marketplace as I've done this morning. Often during these trawls through the fashion morass I see items that I would not buy but perhaps have a degree of mod fashion potential, but I never list them as I dont purchase them. Therefore, this morning I figured I'd kill several birds with a single stone: I'd put up a lengthy post without actually having to type much at all. Also, I will highlight a few mod items that normally would not get blogged and also I'm not required to spend any lindens. So I have basically grabbed the snapshot of the item from its page at the marketplace and then added the link to the item below it. I neither recommend nor do I advise against purchase so the choice is yours I'm merely acting as a conduit into your lindens wallet, and all for free....are you listening designers, hahaha.

Last Eden Parka

One item thats very popular amongst mods, and especially Mod revivalists of the eighties is the leatrher trench coat, inspired by the Ace Face Sting [c'mon don't laugh] in the iconic film Quadrophenia. Anyway here is a selection of trench coats of variable merit and price. Seek and ye shall find.

As well as a coat every virtual mod is going to need a jacket or two maybe these appeal and can fill that hole in your mod wardrobe.

And as the tunes wind down I think I'll leave this post and leave you to decide if there is anything here worth purchasing, I just dont have the funds to buy everything, despite all evidence to the contrary. Enjoy your linden splashing...I need a coffee refill.

ciao

Modernist Fashion in SL

I have been out repeat buying again, as I grabbed myself yet another parka, that must make five of them hoarded away in my wardrobe now. This particular one was found whilst trawling the Marketplace looking for anything remotely mod amidst the mountains of fashion drivel that pours into the virtual world daily. Touted as a Gallagher Parka I surmised it must have its roots in the new real fashion range by the younger Gallagher Pretty Green, so I was intrigued to see how it would translate into virtual fashion design. On the whole its a very nice item, plenty of variations, plenty of well constructed prim work, hood up or down options; a heavy mod motif or a plainer option all very good. However one blot on the landscape is the rather shoddy work on the jacket layer that means my shirt constantly shows beneath the parka where it is meant to meld into the prim hood. No matter how much i tweak the hood I cannot correct this fault, most irritating on a 300l$ plus item. So a great item marred by a slight lapse in concentration, is it worth the 300plus? Hmmm with so few classically mod items on sale for men its a definite contender and I'm content if not ecstatic with mine. It looks good in the right pose and helps with your cool rating so why not give it a try?

The parka comes in a range of colours and in male and female versions, so options for everyone, being a traditionalist I opted for green but as a Britpop mod I guess you can choose whichever colour suits.

Modernist Fashion in SL

Yum yum a new mod fashion item to blog about. Synonamous with mod fashion is the green parka; there are several available in second life which have been blogged here; but there is always scope for variation. So, when I read the Fade to Grey blog post on a new parka I eagerly sought it out. One of the issues with the brilliant but prim heavy Aoharu parka was getting the prim items to fit the smaller vavatars of the modette. Ostensibly I think the parka was designed as a male only item and this created difficulties for the modettes who bought one. Hopefully there should be no such concerns here as the parka comes in both male and female versions. However, as I loaded up the prim hood on my version I noticed a flaw in the design that left the top of my white T-Shirt exposed. The green jacket under layer was not cut high enough to block the white T-Shirt with a blanket of green and despite extensive position with the prim hood/collar I was unable to satidfactorily position it to block out the T-Shirt and still retain all the elements of the prim attachment. I do wish female designers would bring in a range of male body shapes to try out their designs on as many prim attachments are often too small for male shapes that tend on average to be rather large. I tried a smaller shape once and felt like a dwarf and so reluctantly followed the herd and stuck with my big shape.

But, enough of the gripes and lets put forward some positive comments. The dark olive colour of the coat is perfect, the styling of the coat is good too, although it lacks the classic fish tail that gave the parka its name. The hood collar combination is also a fine piece of work, despite my fitting grumbles, but it lacks a fur trim [also a fundamental element of the parka], the sleeves, pockets and other prim work are very nice and the parka has a very mod feel to it, despite my grumbling. And, despite my grumbling I like it and was happy to buy one. However, its not a cheap item at 380L$, so you may feel inclined to look elsewhere. For the modettes out there I would say its an excellent buy and there will probably be less fitting issues than with the male version; for guys wanting to look sharp its a good option but many could opt for a freebie version if its still available ... its just a virtual guy thing. In the end you pays yer money and takes yer chance; I like it yes its far from perfect but its still a cool piece of virtual mod wear and is now hung up alongside the other coats in my mod folder.

Fun at the AAi

Tuesday saw me visit the Twisted Wheel to catch an early set before jumping on my Vespa and heading across the grid to the AAi; to catch Edens set. With Kim's computer still duffed Eden is playing the full two hours, no mean feat to keep everything musically fresh. But, unsurprisingly she managed it beautifully with a wide range of beat and garage bands, pumping out a throaty stream of top tunes.

The regular gang of sixties chill outs were in attendance, the usual spiel was spun and everyone had enormous amounts of fun, is there a better way to spend a virtual evening than in front of the computer laughing with friends and chilling to some terrific music. I think not, the scene may be small in the scale of the global village but its dynamic passionate and above all bags of fun.

Eden looked resplendant in her Aoharu, parka ... yes it made her bum look big but its a virtual world just fiddle with that prim. So good in fact that I took mine off, Sean was strutting with his handbag and natty scarf, looks cool that scarf I should get one perhaps!! There were Fred Perrys aplenty and cool ska T-Shirts a full scale riot of modernist fashion. Awesome, lets hope a few more chilled designs come our way.

Unfortunately I had to leave with thirty minutes of the set left, hopefully I'll get rid of the pesky cold and be on full burn by next week.

It didnt, I even missed Thursday night at Soul Mods!

FREEBIE MODS

I was wondering to myself the other day if a virtual mod could dress in a sharp mod way for FREE! As this time of year seems to herald a hunt bonanza I figured I might be able to dress out a freebie mod by grabbing the odd prize and a few regualar freebies. It was actually suprisingly easy.

First up was some shoes and I noticed the Jeepers Creepers had a cool pair of bowling shoes in the SAH treasure hunt. These shoes were a must; so I tp'd in there scurried around the very centre of the store found the big boot and made my escape with some ultra cool new mod shoes. Strike one!

Next I needed some trousers, freebie trousers and jeans are littered across the grid but I wanted a name brand, something uber stylish. Male fashion on the grid doesnt get any cooler than Redgrave so hopping on a notecard lm I quicjkly gathered the free black pants redgrave @ le look, an awesome freebie from a top virtual designer. Strike two!

Finally I had a choice to make I could get one of a myriad of freebie T-Sirts that plague the grid, or I could track down a cool sweater or jacket; maybe a nice cool shirt. Or I could go totally mod and get a Parka and after all what screams mod louder than a fishtail parka. So I scurried over to Popscene and clicked the box. Strike three!

Sure I still need some sizzling shades and a neat hair cut, but I was definitely mod and it had cost me zilch, a mod bargain.

It is most definitely January sales times and I dashed over to Aoharu specifically to grab their mod parka. Its not as thematically mod as some others that are available but Aoharu is one of the best sculptie designer stores on the grid so its well worth grabbing while its half price. The parka comes in several colours but I opted for the classic green Its a beautifully crafted item with prim sleeves, a prim fishtail hem and the fluffy prim hood.

While your there why not check out some of the other items, get in quick while the sales last.

Modernist Fashion in SL

One of the clothing items that is viewed as standard issue and defines you as a mod is the US military fishtail parka, emblazoned with cloth patches championing mod band or UK insignia.

Essential outer clothing for the mod astride his scooter the parka easily compliments the casual polo and jeans look or a more sophisticated suit style.

This second life design, found at Slate Speed Scooters, enhanced your virtual mod lifestyle. Its prim hood and jacket/skirt combination beautifully compliments the rest of your modernist wardrobe. It has two jacket versions, one proudly carrying THE WHO scrawled on the back, the other is plain but carries the Union flag on its sleeve. A masculine essential in the virtual mod world, perhaps a little overpriced at 400L, but that's being hyoper critical, jump on your teleport over to the store and grab one, check out there scooters too .. I bought one but SL ate it as I unpacked it and I never got to see it, But, thats a whole other story.
